United Philanthropy Forum Presents
MOMENTUM FUND:
How do we put racial equity in motion?
We explicitly and unapolagetically prioritize BIPOC-led organizations that intentionally serve BIPOC communities.
We work to emphasize the importance of breaking down unequal power dynamics that can slow the momentum of organizations carrying out incredible work in their communities.
We acknowledge the work and leadership efforts of the community based organisations we partner with and only seek to add momentum to the programs and initiatives they have been building for years.
The process starts with BIPOC-led organizations, who are entrenched in BIPOC communities and know what it takes for communities to be whole, sustained and thriving, but lack access to the economic and political resources to implement comprehensive solutions to issues.
The initial force directs the actions of large foundations and philanthropic support organizations serving as intermediaries - in this case, the Gates Foundation and the United Philanthropy Forum - to design a racial equity-focused grantmaking process and use its network of philanthropic groups to broaden the reach of the initiative.
Once the initial force focuses the direction of the philanthropic activity, it gains traction from the racial equity focused process that requires constant interrogation and adjustment of the actions of the Momentum Fund staff and Advisory Board to ensure the work is equitable and impactful.
The final stage is the impact that results from the way the grantee partners use the grant awards and other resources connected to the Momentum Fund to increase the capacity of their COVID-19 response efforts in their respective communities.
